In order to reduce the likelihood of incidents on the formation lap please observe the following for Championship, Club events and any other official races:
- the pole sitter should accelerate as soon as the countdown reaches zero and the "begin formation lap" message appears.
- the second place driver should not accelerate until he sees the pole sitter move. The third place driver not until he sees the second move and so on.
- keep in SINGLE FILE FORMATION. The "begin formation lap" message tells you to follow the car ahead of you in the line you are in (e.g. 10th to follow 8th). IGNORE this and follow the driver placed immediately in front of you (e.g. 10th to follow 9th).
- concentrate on the car(s) ahead of you, not those behind! The following car is responsible for not hitting the car ahead, do not string out the field but do not sit on the gearbox try to follow offset particularly entering corners.
- the pole sitter should drive at a reasonable pace, enough to warm up the tyres through the turns but not so fast that those behind will get too strung out.
- Burnouts: Wheelspin on initial launch off the formation lap grid is acceptable, but again drivers must maintain control of their vehicle when doing so. For the remainder of the formation lap, burnouts [wheelspin created from over acceleration] are UNACCEPTABLE. Drivers seen to be slowing excessively in order to practice launching the car, or warm the rear tires will be penalized. To keep things simple, if the Race Stewards see smoke, penalties will follow.
- Weaving to warm tyres, experiments have shown that weaving only increases the tyre temperatures by one or two degrees whilst experience has shown that weaving causes the most incidents on a formation lap. The most effect method is to work the tyres harder in a corner to increase heat. Weaving is unnecessary but may add to the atmosphere, however be prepared for the consequences of any incident resulting from weaving
- avoid all hard braking except in normal braking zones and then only down to approximately the normal speed for the turn. Unexpected hard braking will ripple back through the pack and cause serious problems for those behind you. If you want to warm the brakes then the best method is to lean gently on the brake pedal whilst still pressing the throttle to maintain your speed (assuming you have your pedals on separate axes).
- do not accelerate hard unless you are sure it is clear to do so and not to such high speeds that you will then need to brake hard to slow down again (except in normal braking zones).
- if you should spin off then regain any places lost in as safe a manner as possible. If you see someone spin off then be aware that they may be trying to pass you.
- If you lose a wing you must pit and start from pit lane (it is best to hit 'esc' and then click on the 'race' button which gives you a totally repaired car). You must then wait for the pit exit lights to change from red to green before you can rejoin the track. The lights do not change until the lead car has reached the end of the first sector so it may take some time depending on the track. On no account leave until the lights do change green or you will be automatically disqualified from the race. Bear in mind engine temperature and consider switching off engine whilst waiting
Any driver not observing these guidelines may leave themselves open to penalty especially if they have an incident.

=====General=====
Please ignore what Rfactor tells you and follow the driver who is in the //grid //position ahead of you. Take the time before you begin the formation lap to see who is on the grid ahead of you [either to your left or right], that is the person you will follow [not the person directly in front of you]. The proper alignment for Formation laps is **SINGLE FILE**, leave a gap of approximately 5-10 car lenghts between yourself and the car ahead in case the car in front suddenly has to brake. Speed from the pace setter [pole position] should be brisk but not fast.
As much as it is important not to follow too closely, it is also important do not to string out [fall far behind], this creates a long wait time for the race leaders on the grid [idling] and can cause engine overheating [important in the GP79 cars, see note at bottom of this page]. Should you crash and damage your car, ESC out and start from the pits, but wait for the GREEN PIT EXIT LIGHT after the normal start otherwise, its a DQ. This wait may appear strangely long, you will not get the green light until cars starting from the grid reach the end of the first sector, so be prepared to wait. You may find it necessary to shut down your engine to avoid overheating [again, see bottom of page]. If you crash or spin but have no damage, work your way //safely //back into your position either during the formation lap, or preferably once you reach the final grid. If a car in front of you crashes, do **not **wait for them to return to the track; keep the formation lap going and prepare for that car to catch up.
**REMEMBER**: If a car spins on formation lap it will try to get back in position. DO NOT wait for them, just follow the procedure as planned. Keep an eye out and just make room for them to pass you. If you spin and there is little room to get back in position [cars ahead weaving for example] while making your way to the grid, just be patience and find your spot on the grid itself.
**WEAVING**
Weaving on the track in order to heat up your tires is permitted, however extreme caution is advised. Your tires will be cold and therefore not have the amount of grip you may be used to. If you want to use this method to warm your tires, gentle and slow weaving is recommended. CAUTION: Keep in mind that you are responsible to keep control of your car AT ALL TIMES, that includes Formation Laps. Spinning your car, or running off track may appear innocent enough, but it creates problems for the drivers around you. As we enforce single file formations this can be done safely but a mistake is easily made , one bump in the track and you are facing the other way.
**BRAKING**
Do not brake excessively hard , this is too dangerous for those behind you. Brake into corners as you would normally, anything can be done but keep going and do not stop or slow down too much. An effective method to warm up the brakes without creating issues for others is simply to 'ride' the brakes; while travelling at a regular speed, gently begin to press on the brake pedal without removing any throttle input. As the car begins to slow, apply more throttle, then more brake, effectively equalizing the two. You will then safely be maintaining speed while also applying brakes. This method can bring brake temperatures up quite quickly and effectively, so it need only be done once or at most twice. Be aware however, if you are forced to sit on the final grid for a long period [top ten grid position] your brakes will cool down, nothing you can do about that, so remember that when heading into your first braking zone.
**STARTS**
Practice starts are //prohibited //anywwhere on the track, including the grid itself as cars lock in. No exceptions.
Restarts will not be handed out by race control, mess it up and you will start from the pits or worse, not start at all. If you are involved in a Formation Lap incident, your fault or not, do NOT request a restart using chat. Period.
(Restarts are only initiated under extreme circumstances by the Admin, and not by request; server error, server lag, etc.)
Every officially sanctioned race [club days/nights and practices are excluded] Formation Lap is reviewed by the Legends Race Stewards.
